3. Printing (or Previewing) a Care Plan
Click on the Print Plan button
Clicking on the Print Plan button displays the Print options window. If you just want to print
the care plan, go on to the next step. However, this window also gives you options to print one page of the care
plan, print multiple copies of the care plan, or choose a different printer (with the Setup button).
If you are printing from the main screen with the Patient Database, the highlighted care plan will be printed.
If you are printing from the patient care plan form, the care plan you are editing will be printed.
Click on the OK button (or press Enter)

You can see exactly what the printed care plan will look like by using the Preview Plan ption. This

The Print button sends the care plan to the printer with no confirmation window.
Click on the Exit button
Exiting the Preview screen returns you to the NurseMaster program.
4. Recertifying, Backing Up, and Importing Care Plans
You must be at the main screen with the Patient Database to recertify, back up, or import care plans.
Recertifying a Care Plan
When you recertify a care plan, NurseMaster makes a new copy of the care plan, complete with all
diagnosis and interventions. The date of the new care plan is advanced 2 months from the original care plan date
to start the new certification period.
Click on the Recertify Plan button
When you click on Recertify Plan, you are asked to confirm that you want to duplicate the highlighted
care plan.
Click the Yes button (or press Enter)
The new care plan appears in the Patient Database highlighted, ready to be updated. The original
care plan also remains in the Patient Database (you may wish to keep originals around for a few months before deleting
them).
Backing Up Care Plans
When you backup the care plans, NurseMaster copies the complete Patient Database to a floppy disk
(or whereever you choose).
Choose Backup Care Plans from the Tools menu
When you choose Backup Care Plans, you are presented with the option to change the backup destination
from the floppy drive (A:) to another destination.
If you wish to backup to a destination other than A:, type in the new destination
You can backup the Patient Database to any directory of your choice. You can backup to another
floppy drive (B:), another directory on your hard drive (C:\BACKUP), or a tape drive or zip drive (D: or E:). Make
sure you backup to somewhere besides your hard drive, in case your whole hard drive goes bad.
Click the Backup button (or press Enter)
A backup gauge shows the progress of the backup. When the backup is done, you'll be returned
to the main Patient Database screen.
Importing Care Plans
When you import care plans, NurseMaster ADDS the care plans from the source location to the care
plans you already have. For example, if you import care plans from a floppy, the care plans on the floppy will
be copied into the Patient Database on your computer, in addition to the care plans that were already there.
Choose Import Care Plans from the Tools menu
When you choose Import Care Plans, you are presented with the option to change the source of
the import from the floppy drive (A:) to another location.
If you wish to import from a location other than A:, type in the new location
You can import care plans from any location of your choice.
Click the Import button (or press Enter)
An import gauge shows the progress of the import. When the import is done, you'll be returned
to the main screen with the Patient Database.
If you are importing duplicates, you will be prompted to choose one of the following three options: Replace, Duplicate,
or Skip. Replace will overwrite the existing care plan with the imported plan. Duplicate will leave the existing
care plan intact and add the imported plan to the database. Skip will leave the existing care plan intact and not
import the duplicate plan.
5. Helpful Hints
General NurseMaster Hints
Press the F1 key while using NurseMaster to view this help file.
BACKUP YOUR CARE PLANS OFTEN! (See Backing Up Care Plans in section 4 above.) It only takes a minute, and will
save you a lot of work sometime down the road. There's a saying about computer and hard drive problems: it's not
a matter of IF , but WHEN.
Use the ESC (escape) key to undo changes to a field. For example, if you accidentally delete some text in part
of the care plan, just press ESC to restore it to the original text. NOTE: This only works while the cursor is
still in that text box. Once you move the cursor to another text box, you can no longer undo.
If you do not set a password in NurseMaster, you can just press ENTER at the login/welcome screen to go into
NurseMaster. If you set a password, try to choose one that would be difficult for someone to guess, yet easy for
you to remember. NOTE: the first order of security is to prevent unauthorized access to the computer!
Try setting your Windows screen size to 800x600 or greater. The default of 640 (dots across) x 480 (dots tall)
is limiting for all computer programs, including NurseMaster.
You can double-click on a care plan to open it for updating (this does the same thing as clicking on a care plan
and pressing the Update Care Plan button). Likewise with the diagnoses and interventionsjust double-click with
the mouse to quickly open them up for editing.
Most buttons and menu items have Accelerator Keys, which allow them to be selected with the keyboard (no mouse
clicks required). Simply hold down the ALT key (it works like the SHIFT key), and type the letter that is underlined
on the button. For example, to press the "Preview Plan" button, type ALT-P. Or to select "Backup
Care Plans" in the "Tools" menu, type ALT-T, B.
Some menu items also have other Accelerator Keys. For example, CTRL-P will print the current care plan.
You can cut, copy, and paste to and from the Windows clipboard using CTRL-X, CTRL-C, and CTRL-V, respectively.
Use this after you've typed something into the wrong field and want to cut and paste it into the right field.
Use the Doctor Editor in the Tools menu to edit or delete the doctors in the Doctor pull-down list.
Patient Database Hints
Sort the Patient Database by Patient Number, Patient Name, or Certification Date by clicking
on the desired sort field at the bottom of the screen.
Press the Delete (Del) key on the keyboard to delete the highlighted care plan. NOTE: You will be asked to confirm
that you want to delete the care plan. Make sure you choose the right care plan, and really want to delete it,
before you answer Yes to the confirmation request.
Care Plan Entry Screen Hints
The Visit Preference box and the Code Status box have some common entries stored in their drop-down
lists. Just click on the small arrow (inverted triangle) on the right side of the text box to view and choose one
of the common entries. (Of course, you can just ignore the common entries and type in any entry you wish.)
Diagnosis Form Hints
The Diagnosis box has all of the standard NANDA diagnoses stored in its drop-down list. Just
click on the small arrow (inverted triangle) at the right end of the diagnosis box to view and choose a NANDA diagnosis.
You can even choose a NANDA diagnosis and edit it, if desired. Or just skip the NANDA diagnoses altogether and
enter your own into the Diagnosis box.
Print Preview Screen Hints
When you preview a care plan, you can fit the whole page on the screen by clicking on the first
button in the top, left corner of the screen.
